Notes
Tom Longshaw, DERA
Discussed the potential for visualising the visualisation process. In his view the process includes data extraction, computation and finally visualisation.
Discussion:
Kathleen Hennesey
Cited an assessment of visual programming interfaces, which found that there was an improvement in cost benefit ratio for the first three years, but that after this it was necessary to rewrite the applications.
Tom Longshaw
Responded by saying that he was advocating the use of visual programming for exploration and prototyping only.
Vincent Taylor
Warned of the dangers of showing military customers prototypes.
Mark Smith
Pointed out that prior to data extraction it would be useful to consider proper definitions.
Mark O'Dell
Queried the iterative process with regard to visualising the visualisation process and asked whether evolutionary algorithms working on natural selection could find the optimal visualisation. Tom Longshaw concurred.
